How Long Does Vape Juice Last in Storage?

The manufacturer-stated shelf life of a bottle of e-liquid or box of vape pods is usually about one year from the date of manufacture. Some manufacturers, however, don’t bother putting best-by dates in their e-liquids because they assume that people will use those e-liquids long before they degrade. If you receive a bulk order of e-liquid that doesn’t have dates on the bottles, you might want to mark the bottles with the date of receipt so you’ll have an idea of how long you can wait before finishing them.

Here’s the good news about e-liquid storage. The fact that a bottle of vape juice has reached the “expiration date” doesn’t mean that it’s unsafe to use. There is, in fact, no known point at which a bottle of e-liquid is so old that using it would be unwise. To be on the safe side, though, we recommend using vape juice within a year of receiving it.

What Happens to E-Liquid During Storage?

The main reason why you should use e-liquid within a year of receiving it is because, after a year, the flavour quality will likely degrade so much that the e-liquid will no longer be as enjoyable to vape as it was when it was new. In addition, after a year, the nicotine content of e-liquid might degrade to the point where you no longer feel the same throat hit or experience the same level of satisfaction that you would have if you’d used it sooner. During the process of oxidation and degradation, the nicotine in e-liquid also turns yellow. There’s no need to be concerned, though, about yellowing in e-liquid that’s been in storage for a while. The oxidation is normal and is not a safety issue.

It’s important to remember also that plastic isn’t truly impervious to air. During long-term storage, the vape juice in a stored bottle of e-liquid will interact with the outside environment, causing chemical reactions that ultimately result in the degradation of some of the e-liquid’s more volatile flavour notes. A bottle of e-liquid that’s stored for a year will almost certainly taste different from when it was new. E-liquid in a glass bottle may do better in long-term storage, but most vape juice these days doesn’t ship in glass because more people prefer plastic.

What Can I Do to Make My E-Liquid Last as Long as Possible?

The best and most practical thing that you can do to improve the shelf life of your e-liquid is to store it in an area that’s cool, protected from light and out of reach. For most people, the ideal place for e-liquid storage is a high cabinet. If you have no children in the household, you might also consider storing vape juice in your refrigerator. The cool temperature in the refrigerator will slow down the chemical changes taking place in the e-liquid and can help to preserve its flavour. If you have children, though, we recommend against using the refrigerator for e-liquid storage due to the inherent risk.

Is There Any Way to Revive an E-Liquid That’s Been in Storage Too Long?

Nicotine – and many of the flavouring compounds used in e-liquid – are volatile. As soon as they’re mixed together and exposed to air, irreversible chemical changes begin to take place. Once an e-liquid reaches the point at which you no longer find it enjoyable to vape, there’s no bringing it back. You can still use the e-liquid, but apart from possibly mixing it with a newer vape juice that you still like, there’s nothing that you can do to resurrect it. For the best possible experience, you should always store your e-liquid carefully and try to use it within a year of buying it.

How Long Does E-Liquid Last During Normal Use?

The amount of e-liquid that you use each day will depend on how frequently you vape, how much vapour your device produces and the nicotine strength of the e-liquid that you use.

These are the things that will cause your vape juice supply to dwindle more quickly.

  • If you use a lower-strength e-liquid, you’ll need to vape more often to feel the desired level of satisfaction.
  • The more often you vape, the more e-liquid you’ll use.
  • If you use a device that produces very large vapour clouds, you’ll use more e-liquid. Those clouds have to come from somewhere.

The way to make your e-liquid or vape pods last as long as possible, then, is to use a small device with modest vapour production and a high nicotine strength. Avoid chain vaping; just vape until you feel the desired level of satisfaction, and then put your device down for a while. Learn more about how to choose the right e-liquid nicotine strength for your needs.

If you’re using a pod system – and the nicotine strength that you’re using is right for you – you should find that you use approximately one pod per day. If you use more than one pod, you should consider paying closer attention to how often you vape or increasing your nicotine strength to conserve your pod supply.
