JUUL® vs. Vape Pen: Which Is Right for You?

So, do you JUUL®, or do you vape? If you’re not sure what the difference is, you’re in the right place. JUUL® is the world’s most dominant vaping product in traditional tobacco retail outlets, but in the bigger scheme, it simply owns one segment of a much wider market. People who initially start vaping do so because they want to quit smoking. Some of those people stick with the product that helped them quit, and very often, that product is JUUL®. Many others, however, become vaping hobbyists and move on to open-system vaping devices like the Joyetech eGo AIO. Where are you in your evolution as a vaper? When comparing JUUL® vs. vape pens, which side of the fence are you on? If you’re not sure, this article is for you. We’re going to explain how the two forms of vaping compare.
Nothing Is Simpler to Use Than JUUL®
One of the biggest reasons why the JUUL® e-cigarette became so successful so quickly is because it is simple, intuitive and reliable in ways that earlier e-cigarettes simply weren’t. Not getting vapour out of your JUUL®? No problem; just recharge the battery. Getting a weak flavour? It’s time to replace the pod. The JUUL® is so user friendly that it even prevents you from experiencing a harsh dry hit if you forget to replace an empty pod. The device automatically monitors the temperature of the atomizer coil, and if the coil becomes too hot – which would happen if you used the device when the pod was empty – the device automatically cuts its power.
The JUUL® makes it possible to vape without ever worrying about the specifics of what you’re doing. If you migrate to any other type of vaping device, your experience will definitely become more complex.
JUUL® Offers the Most Cigarette-Like Vaping Experience Anywhere
When you think about how the JUUL® e-cigarette works – the push-pull pod system, the potent nicotine salt e-liquid, the drop-in magnetic charging dock – it’s obvious that the product was designed by smokers, for smokers. Nothing about the JUUL® is likely to appeal to vaping hobbyists at all. For smokers, though, everything about the JUUL® is appealing. It’s likely that the JUUL® has helped more smokers switch to vaping than any other e-cigarette on the market, and many JUUL® users have no interest in experimenting with other vaping platforms.
So, should you be interested in experimenting with other vaping platforms? That depends on whether the hobbyist side of vaping appeals to you at all. When you compare JUULing vs. vaping, the biggest difference is that the JUUL® is a vaping device for people who want to get their nicotine in the most efficient and problem-free way as possible. Vape pens are for people who want to explore the wider world of e-liquid flavours and don’t mind the fact that those explorations will require a little more effort.
A Vape Pen Offers a Much Wider Flavour Selection
If you want to enjoy the widest possible selection of e-liquid flavours, you definitely want to use a vape pen. While it’s true that using a refillable pod makes it possible to use almost any e-liquid with the JUUL®, the fact is that you’re not likely to have a good experience with the JUUL® unless you use a nicotine salt e-liquid. When you use a device with lower vapour output, you’ll have trouble getting any real level of satisfaction with a lower-nicotine e-liquid.
Vape pens, on the other hand, offer much greater vapour production and can therefore deliver a completely satisfying vaping experience even with lower-nicotine e-liquids. Nicotine salt e-liquids are becoming more popular, but for now, standard e-liquids still outnumber them. Comparing the JUUL® vs. vape pens, you’ll definitely enjoy a much larger flavour selection with a vape pen.
A Vape Pen Offers Greater Performance
A vape pen doesn’t just beat the JUUL® in vapour production; in terms of raw performance, a vape pen beats the JUUL® in every way. A high-end vape pen, for example, may have a battery capacity more than 10 times that of the JUUL®. It’ll also have a tank that holds several times more e-liquid than a JUUL® pod. Depending on how you vape, you may find that you can use a vape pen all day without ever stopping to refill the tank or recharge the battery. With the JUUL®, that’s almost impossible. Even if you can make a single JUUL® pod last all day, you’ll almost certainly need to recharge the battery multiple times per day. A battery capacity of 200 mAh simply isn’t that much.
A Vape Pen Is More Complex Than JUUL®
There’s no way around the fact that switching to a vape pen will increase the complexity of your vaping experience. As we mentioned above, the JUUL® was designed to appeal to the smoker’s desire for simplicity. It’s supposed to be so easy to use that you don’t have to think about anything other than charging the battery and replacing the pod occasionally. If you switch to a vape pen, on the other hand, refilling the tank and replacing the atomizer coil will become parts of your vaping routine. Some vape pens may also have controls and menu systems that you’ll need to learn. None of these things are particularly difficult – a vape pen is definitely a consumer product that doesn’t require an engineering degree – but you may not find them particularly fun if the simple design is one of your favourite aspects of the JUUL®.
A Vape Pen May Require You to Change Your Inhaling Style
Before you buy a vape pen, you need to be aware of a major fundamental difference between beginner-oriented e-cigarettes and vape pens made for vaping hobbyists. The two types of devices are often designed for different inhaling styles. Small devices like the JUUL® work best If you draw the vapour into your mouth before inhaling it into your lungs. That’s the same inhaling style that you use when smoking a cigarette, illustrating once again that the JUUL® is designed to please smokers first and foremost.
Vape pens, on the other hand, are often designed to produce much larger vapour clouds than what you get with the JUUL®. When you use a device with that level of vapour production, you’ll use an e-liquid with a much lower nicotine strength than what you’d use with the JUUL®.
While the most popular nicotine strength for the JUUL® e-cigarette is 5.0%, the most common nicotine strengths among vape pen users are 0.3% and 0.6%. That’s an enormous difference, but you’ll barely feel it because the large volume of vapour makes up for the lower nicotine strength of the e-liquid.
What you will notice, however, is the fact that a vape pen requires a different inhaling style if you want to maximize its vapour production. Most vape pens work best when you inhale the vapour directly into the lungs, and switching to that inhaling style isn’t always easy for JUUL® owners.
A Vape Pen May Be Less Expensive Than JUUL® Over Time
The final benefit of switching from the JUUL® to a vape pen is that doing so may reduce your vaping expenses if you currently use pre-filled JUUL® pods. There are several things that you can do to make the JUUL® less expensive to use. You can refill your JUUL® pods, for example, or can start using refillable JUUL® pods designed for multiple uses. If you only use pre-filled JUUL® pods, though, you’re paying a lot of money to vape. That’s especially true if you use more than one pod per day; JUUL® pods aren’t cheap. Bottled e-liquids, in comparison, are extremely inexpensive. A 100 ml bottle of e-liquid costs about the same as a pack of four JUUL® pods holding just 0.7 ml of e-liquid each. Since switching to a vape pen means that you’ll be buying your e-liquid by the bottle, you may find that the switch dramatically reduces the amount of money that you spend on vape juice.
